Comparing parcel prices: how DHL, Hermes and DPD charge
German carriers charge differently. DHL uses weight steps (up to 2, 5, 10, 20 and 31.5 kg) with fixed maximum dimensions. Hermes and DPD use size classes based on the sum of the longest and shortest side; weight does not matter within the limit. A light but large box is therefore often cheaper with DHL, a small heavy parcel with Hermes.
Girth = longest side + 2 × width + 2 × height. Example: 60 × 40 × 40 cm gives 60 + 80 + 80 = 220 cm. Volumetric weight = L × W × H ÷ 5000 (in kg) – not applied to domestic consumer parcels by DHL, Hermes and DPD, but used for express and international shipments.

Money-saving tips
- Use the smallest possible box – with Hermes and DPD the sum of the longest and shortest side decides.
- Parcel shop to parcel shop is much cheaper than door delivery with Hermes and DPD.
- DHL 'Päckchen' are cheap but have no tracking and no liability – use a parcel for valuable items.
- Paying postage online is cheaper than in store with Hermes.
