With direct current the voltage drops across both the outgoing and return conductor: U = 2 × L × I × ρ / A. ρ is the resistivity (copper 1/56, aluminium 1/35 Ω·mm²/m), L the one-way length.
Especially in 12/24/48 V systems and PV-DC strings the percentage voltage drop is critical and should stay below about 3 %.
