Understanding Sleep Cycles: Why the Alarm Hurts at the Wrong Time
Sleep does not proceed uniformly but in cycles of on average 90 minutes: light sleep is followed by deep sleep and finally the REM phase with intense dreaming. Anyone woken in the middle of deep sleep struggles with sleep inertia – grogginess that can last up to 30 minutes. At the end of a cycle, however, sleep is shallow and waking up is much easier. That is exactly what this calculator targets: it places your wake-up or bedtime so that the alarm rings as close to the end of a cycle as possible.
How the calculator works
Example: you have to get up at 6:30. Five 90-minute cycles make 7.5 hours of sleep; add about 15 minutes to fall asleep. Ideal bedtime: 22:45. If you're running late, the 4-cycle option at 0:15 is better than going to bed at 23:30 and being woken mid-cycle – less sleep with the right timing often feels more refreshing than more sleep with an alarm in deep sleep.
How much sleep do you really need?
Adults usually do well with 7 to 9 hours – that's 5 to 6 cycles. What matters is less the exact number of hours than regularity: a stable rhythm with fixed times synchronises your body clock. The 3-cycle option (4.5 hours) is an emergency solution for short nights, not a permanent state: chronic sleep deprivation weakens the immune system, concentration and metabolism.
Limits of the model
The 90 minutes are an average – real cycles vary between 80 and 110 minutes and become longer and more REM-heavy towards morning. Time to fall asleep also varies with stress, caffeine and screen light. Use the calculated times as a starting point and shift them in 15-minute steps until waking up feels easy.
