The formula: hours times usage per hour
The idea is simple: usage = hours × usage per hour. The usage per hour depends almost entirely on the quality you choose. The higher the resolution, the more data flows. If you watch a lot in 4K, keep a close eye on your data plan.
Rules of thumb by quality
These rough figures apply per hour and help with estimates:

These numbers are approximations. Provider, codec and picture content all affect the real value.
A worked example
Say you watch 3 hours in Full HD one evening: 3 h × 3 GB/h = 9 GB. On a 10 GB plan that nearly uses up your allowance. In SD it would be only about 2.1 GB, but in 4K roughly 21 GB – a huge difference driven by the quality setting alone.
Why it matters for mobile data
At home on Wi-Fi the usage rarely matters. On the go it decides whether your plan lasts the month. A simple trick: set the streaming app to a lower quality on mobile.
