Airline vs. driving distance: estimating the real distance

As the crow flies, the distance is always shorter than the actual route. Our calculator estimates realistic detour factors:

  • Urban area: factor 1.4-1.6 (40-60% detour)
  • Rural road: Factor 1.2-1.3 (20-30% detour)
  • Highway: Factor 1.1-1.2 (10-20% detour)
  • Mountain region: Factor 1.5-1.8 (50-80% detour)
  • Average: factor 1.3 (30% detour)

Example: 50 km as the crow flies in a rural area: Estimated driving distance 50 × 1.25 = 62.5 km.

Influencing factors: Road network, mountains, rivers, local crossings, highway availability, routing.

Application: Travel cost estimation, travel planning, delivery routes, commuting distances.
