Calculating Working Days: German Public Holidays by Federal State
How many working days are there between two dates? In Germany the answer depends on the federal state: Bavaria has up to 13 public holidays, Berlin and the northern states considerably fewer. This calculator counts all calendar days, subtracts weekends and removes the public holidays of your chosen state – but only when they fall on a working day. A holiday on a Sunday doesn't cost a working day, after all.
Example: the year 2026 in North Rhine-Westphalia
2026 has 365 calendar days, 104 of them weekend days. Of the eleven public holidays in North Rhine-Westphalia, eight fall on weekdays (New Year, Good Friday, Easter Monday, 1 May, Ascension Day, Whit Monday, Corpus Christi, Christmas Day) – German Unity Day, All Saints' Day and Boxing Day land on weekends. Result: 253 working days. Deducting 30 days of annual leave leaves 223 actual working days.
Movable holidays and special cases
Good Friday, Easter Monday, Ascension, Whit Monday and Corpus Christi move with the Easter date each year, which the calculator determines correctly using the Gaussian Easter algorithm. The Day of Repentance (Saxony only) always falls on the Wednesday before 23 November. Regional exceptions are not covered: Corpus Christi in individual municipalities of Saxony and Thuringia, Assumption Day only in predominantly Catholic Bavarian municipalities, and the Augsburg Peace Festival.
What net working days are used for
Working days are the basis for the commuter allowance in German tax returns, for project planning and delivery deadlines, for converting part-time quotas, or for the question of how many working days a sabbatical really costs. Beware of the German legal term 'Werktage': it includes Saturday (relevant for notice periods and parcel delivery deadlines) – simply select the 6-day week for that.
